On a beautiful warm, sunny and clear day, 11 of us ventured to Walney Island. We were rewarded with an exceptional number of birds, both by species and quantity. The full list is attached. Some very large parasol fungi were seen ( not yet fully open), seals were seen swimming and lounging on the shore and a few butterflies were still on the wing.
On arrival we were told that a Red Breasted Flycatcher was in the warden's garden. On our return we looked and were not convinced we had seen it. However "twitchers" were arriving ( including one from South Manchester),so some of us went for another look. This time we did get several fleeting glimpses but enough to convince the gathering that this really was a Red Breasted Flycatcher. A very rare vagrant and, I guess, probably a once in a lifetime sighting for us. Lucky to be in the right place at the right time!
