The Environment Matters group recently visited the Eco Town recycling plant, an experience that proved both enlightening and thought-provoking.
The tour was facilitated, guiding us through the entire recycling operation from the arrival of household refuse to the final stages of processing.

One of the most fascinating elements was the use of advanced laser technology to separate different types of plastics. We watched as the lasers scanned and sorted items with remarkable precision, ensuring that each plastic type was channelled into its appropriate stream. This innovative approach not only improves the efficiency of recycling, but also significantly enhances the purity of the sorted materials, making them more suitable for reuse.
The commitment to sustainability was further demonstrated by its handling of non-reusable waste. Materials that cannot be recycled are not simply discarded; instead, they are sent for the generation of electricity. The waste-to-energy process is impressive – waste is incinerated in a controlled environment, producing heat which is converted into electricity for the local grid. This method reduces landfill dependency and contributes to the region’s renewable energy targets.
We ended our tour with a discussion over a cuppa and packed lunch. Our visit left us with a greater appreciation of the challenges and achievements involved in modern recycling, as well as a renewed motivation to improve our own recycling habits at home.
