Environment Matters Meeting October 2025

Despite the appalling weather, we were pleased to welcome six resilient members for our recent Environment Matters meeting where we enjoyed a lively discussion focused on solar farms. The session covered how these installations contribute to meeting our ever-growing demands for electricity, as well as the emerging concept of agrivoltaics (the integration of solar panels with agricultural activities) allowing land to be used for both energy generation and farming.

There was a discussion around the proposed One Earth Solar Farm in the Trent Valley. This ambitious project, currently the subject of much debate, has drawn significant objections from residents and groups. We explored the various types of conflicts such large-scale schemes can create, including concerns over land use, landscape impact, and community acceptance. The conversation was both thought-provoking and informative, reflecting the complexity of balancing renewable energy development with local interests.

As a last thought it is interesting to note the renewables have overtaken coal as the world’s biggest source of electricity.
