Gardening Group visit to RHS Harlow Carr Gardens.

The Gardening Group visited RHS Harlow Carr gardens at Harrogate. This was a trip that could be open to all members, and the day was enjoyed by 63 of us. Feeling confident we would enjoy good weather, we set off anticipating a wonderful day.

We arrived at Harlow Carr about 11.30, giving us plenty of time to explore the gardens. The gardens were colourful and the perennials were at their mature best. I am sure we all found inspiration. Possibly not able to replicate the scale of planting, but certainly to take away some plant or colour combinations.

We are all aware of how these hot and dry summers are putting our gardens under stress. It was interesting to see a new bed being developed. It followed the principle of planting in sand, rubble and aggregate. I look forward to seeing if this is indeed a good option for the future.

During our visit we found ample seating around the garden. Refreshments, and a Craft exhibition and market. The Library is extensive and in the entrance we saw a lovely portrait of the great Geoffrey Smith. Harlow Carr was “ his” garden for many years.

This year the RHS are hosting a LEGO event in all of their 5 sites. In Harlow Carr we found a beautiful board, some LEGO plants around the garden and activities for the youngsters. In the main building we found the Garden Centre, RHS shop, and of course Betty’s Tea rooms and shop. It was soon almost 4pm and time to gather for the coach home.

We all enjoyed another garden visit, organised for us by Judith Brown. Thank you Judith, we all appreciate everything you do for the Gardening Group. If you are not yet a member but would like to join, just contact the Group Leader.
