‘Blame it on the Beatles and Bill Shankly’ – John Winter

A large turnout gathered to hear the second presentation by John Winter based on his books of past times in Liverpool, his hometown, the first of which ‘Cunard Yanks’ given last year, was very popular with members. This time, the focus was very much on two of the transformative events of the 1960s – the rise and rise of the Beatles, and the restoration to glory of the Liverpool football team under Bill Shankly.

John’s own life story, the teenage years of progressing to becoming a GP whilst simultaneously a band member and football fan, became the fictionalised protagonist of the book forming the basis of this month’s talk.

The wonderful illustrations used by John, some original photos of the young four in their Hamburg beginnings and later posters of forthcoming appearances in the Liverpool club scene, brought murmurs of delighted recognition from members, no doubt reliving their own youth.

Few in the audience were likely though to have had the privileged view and close encounters of John, whose stories were told with the flair and wit that Liverpool folk have become renowned for, examples of which contributed to a very enjoyable meeting much appreciated by members.
