These are ideas for new groups which have been suggested. If you are interested in any of them, please contact the Groups Coordinator so an initial meeting can be set up if enough members are interested. If you are prepared to be a group facilitator that is even better. Everyone should be encouraged to take part and contribute to the group.
If you have any ideas for other new groups which aren’t in the list, please contact the Groups Coordinator
American History
Presentations and discussions about different aspects of American History. It does not have to just be North America but could embrace the whole of the American continent; who isn’t interested in the Aztecs and Incas and other central American civilisations? Or at the other end of the continent, the Inuit? Not to mention the Native Americans; the rise of Black Power movements; the American Revolution or the Civil War.
Beginners' Languages: French, German, Italian, Spanish.
These have been requested but we need someone who is prepared to lead them.
Computers for Beginners/Technophobes
A hands-on meeting with instruction on the basic use of computers to give you confidence.
Geography Through Pictures
We are a very well travelled group and with the ease of taking photos now, there must be a large number of photos of places all over the world. The group would focus on the culture, history and geography of a place. The group would take place in the winter to remind us of our summer trips – although it would need to be more focussed than just “Where I went on my holiday”.
Jazz
Listening to jazz CDs and discussing the music.
Natural History
There would be talks in the winter and trips in the summer to local places of interest as well as Natural History museums.
Survival Skills
This can be partly covered by the Red Cross First Aid sessions but perhaps there are other aspects which could be considered.
Technology/Electronics/Gadgets
All things technical - interested?
Urban Explorer
Take the train to a nearby town and explore it – although this would obviously be reliant upon the trains actually running properly! We can all get Senior Railcards which give a very good discount and by using the train rather than cars, we are helping the environment. There are at least 11 towns within a journey time of around an hour from Lancaster with no changes. They may not be towns we would normally bother to visit, but all of them have interesting parts. The group members could take it in turns to chose a town, perhaps find out a bit about it from the local tourist board and then the group can go off and explore it. Each would be responsible for booking their own ticket and it would, of course, be weather dependant.
Walking Football/Cricket
This idea is proving popular with several u3as and there are national subject advisors who would be able to help.
